Web 2.0 Consulting

March 15th, 2006 . by JTk

So I was talking to the ninja, who is pretty plugged in, and told him that I was focusing my consultancy on web 2.0 and asked him about what he thought web 2.0 was all about.

We had a very interesting conversation, and even though we are coming at the issue from 2 different sides of things ( me: creative and manipulating the web 2.0 tools available, he: writing exciting new code for web 2.0 apps ) we saw things pretty much the same way, but did expressed them differently.

Ninja talks about web 2.0 being read/write where the original web was just read. That is, back in the day, someone posted something and someone else read it and that was the end of the transaction.

These days the posting of the original content is just the begging of the set of metadata that will tell the story of what that content is. The interaction between publisher and reader can create all new content that is often as important and or interesting as the original posting.

In addition to the original data, that content may get tagged, commented on, remixed, track backed, etc. The users don’t just consume the original content now, they interact with it.

Web 2.0 is all about using and building interesting tools ( like blog software, CMS’s, RSS, etc. ) to publish well formed, standards compliant data in a way that facilitates the users ability to comment, classify, and collect that data and do other interesting stuff to it.

But what does this all mean to you? To your business? It means that the web is changing and to take advantage of it you have to rethink your web strategy. If you are ready to get started, click here to get in touch with us.

A couple other inderesting topics from the conversation that did not make it into the write up :

microformats - everyone publishes dates, lists, calendar metadata, etc.

The 4 types of web 2.0 insiders : API manipulators, devs, suits, and content producers.

Aggrigation tools negate splog - delicious cream rising to the top.
